Since 2017, Donovan Mitchell has been a trailblazer, breaking and breaking records for Utah Jazz, the National Basketball Association (NBA) team he plays for. While playing for the Salt Lake City-based NBA team, he was drafted by the Denver Nuggets in the 2017 NBA draft but didn’t get a chance to play for them because he quickly flew to his current franchise.
A twist of fate presented Donovan’s star with the opportunity to shine when he replaced Aaron Gordon at the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk contest. Gordon had suffered a left hip flexor injury, giving Donovan the platform for the victory with scores of 48 and 50 in the first round, followed by 50 and 48 in the last. Along with winning the coveted Slam Dunk contest that year, the first rookie to achieve that goal since Zach LaVine, he also recorded other rookie accomplishments.

The Slam Dunker was born on September 7, 1996 in Elmsford, New York, where he also grew up. Her parents are Donovan Mitchell Sr. and Nicole Mitchell. There is also a younger sister named Jordan in the picture.
He was educated at the beginning of different schools, including Greenwich Country Day School and Canterbury School – Connecticut. He then completed his junior and senior years at Brewster Academy in Wolfeboro, New Hampshire, and also developed his ball skills playing in the Amateur Athletic Union (AAU) for the City and Riverside Hawks programs, which drove them out of New York.
Before getting into basketball, he also played a bit of baseball in his high school but chose to only play basketball for the University of Louisville. His freshman year was decorated with 7.4 points, 1.7 assists and 3.4 rebounds on average per game. He raised the bar a little higher in his second season in college averaging 15.6 points, 2.7 assists and 4.9 rebounds per game. He was awarded the First Conference All-Coast Coast Team title for his contributions. He then declared his intention to play in the big league and entered the 2017 NBA Draft.
The Denver Nuggets picked him up with the 13th overall pick in the 2017 NBA Draft, but he couldn’t play with the team because he was traded to Utah Jazz in exchange for Tyler Lydon and Trey Lyles. Mitchell Donovan officially signed his first NBA contract with the Jazz on July 5, 2017. He then made history by scoring 37 points in a game against the Memphis Grizzlies.
He played his first NBA game on Oct.18, 2017 against the Denver Nuggets. Mitchell Donovan had 41 career points on Dec. 1, 2017, which upset Jazz’s rookie record for a rookie. Blake Griffin and Allen Iverson are among the NBA rookies who have scored up to 40 points in a game.
With a productive rookie season behind him, it was on February 5, 2018 that Aaron Gordon was named as an injury replacement, earning Donovan another trophy by winning the 2018 NBA Slam Dunk Contest. He is the first rookie since Zach LaVine to lift the trophy.
Among his countless rookie accomplishments are getting Western Conference Rookie of the Month honors (three times in the same season) and setting a rookie record for most scoring in a season. Mitchell Donovan continued his record-breaking streak and was eventually named to the NBA First Team All-Star on May 22, 2018.
