BIOGRAPHY
The great story between Neil Marshall and horror cinema began in 1992 at the Newcastle Film School. It was in fact there, during his studies, that he made a short film of around twenty minutes, focused on zombies. A first attempt which led him, two years later, to serve as editor, storyboarder and assistant director on another short film, Driven, directed for television by Bharat Nalluri .
A director for whom Marshall wrote the screenplay for Killing Time (1998), after being noticed by the company Pilgrim Films for his short Dog Eat Dog. We therefore had to wait until 2001 to finally see him at the helm of a feature film. And for this baptism of fire, what could be better than returning to your first love? This is how Dog Soldiers was born , which pits six inexperienced English soldiers against a pack of bloodthirsty werewolves. Rather noticed across the Channel, the feature film nevertheless does not experience the same fate in the rest of the world.
But it was only a postponement for Neil Marshall, who transformed the attempt in 2005, with The Descent , an exclusively female horror film which sees a group of young speleologists trapped in an underground cave and chased by local monsters. Primal and uncompromising, his second production appears like an electric shock, within a genre that is somewhat in decline, at the same time as it draws attention to its author. Which, before producing The De2cent , took advantage of this notoriety to put into images a much more complex project: Doomsday , a post-apocalyptic thriller which immerses Rhona Mitra ( Hollow Man, the man without a shadow ), Bob Hoskins ( Who wants skin from Roger Rabbit? ) and Malcolm McDowell ( A Clockwork Orange ) in a Mad Max- style Scotland .
In 2010, the filmmaker tried his hand at a new genre, the ancient action film with Centurion , headlined by the rising star of the moment, Michael Fassbender .
