BIOGRAPHY
A student at Stanford, he became interested in drama during his second year of university. He left for Los Angeles in 1978, and appeared in many popular series such as Magnum . He really rose to fame thanks to his portrayal of Sam Malone in the television series Cheers , a role he played for twelve years in a row and which earned him nine Emmy Award nominations.
The success of the series, however, made him gradually abandon the big screen, but he nevertheless starred in Creepshow (1982), Three Men and a Baby , an American remake of Three Men and a Bassinet , and Cousins , where he took up the role played by Victor Lanoux in the original version, Cousin, cousine . During his career, he specialized in “paternal” roles, playing the biological father of Whoopi Goldberg ‘s mixed-race daughter in Made in America , the burglar father of Macaulay Culkin in Make Change, Dad , or even father of his own father ( Jack Lemmon ) in Mon pere .
In 1995, he played alongside his wife, Mary Steenburgen , in the miniseries filmed with exceptional means, Gulliver’s Travels , where he played the main role alongside “a host of stars ( Peter O’Toole , Géraldine Chaplin , Isabelle Huppert and Kristin Scott Thomas ), who are enjoying triumph all over the world. Among his main roles in the cinema, we will also remember his interpretation of an American soldier in We must save Private Ryan by Steven Spielberg , or the husband of Diane Keaton in Mad Money .
In 2007, he returned to the small screen in the series Damages alongside Glenn Close , where he played a powerful man of corrupt businessman, Arthur Frobisher.
